At the November 2023 Board meeting, trustee Victoria Jung was re-elected as chair of the Board and trustee Joshua Zhang was elected as vice-chair for the upcoming one-year term. Both were elected by acclamation.
Trustee Jung was first elected in the 2022 municipal election and served the Board as chair during the first of the Board's four-year term. Trustee Zhang was also elected in 2022 and in the 2022-2023 term served as chair of the Board's finance and personnel committee and as vice-chair of the facilities planning committee.
"It was an honour to serve as chair of the Board over this past year," said chair Jung. "I am committed to continuing my work with colleagues as we meet the challenges of our complex and dynamic school district. Top priorities for the upcoming year include continuing to make fiscally responsible decisions, advancing a school in Olympic Village and enhancing student outcomes."
"I extend my sincere thanks to my fellow trustees for their confidence in me to fulfill this role," says vice-chair Zhang. "I am excited about working alongside chair Jung as our Board continues our work to advance student achievement and well-being."
During the first year of its four-year term, the Board updated its standing committees as well as revised and adopted several policies. It also built and deepened relationships with the three Host Nations, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), S wxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) & səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). The Board also reinstated the School Liaison Officer program and adopted an annual budget without the use of surplus funds - an important step in addressing the school board's structural deficit.
Outgoing vice-chair Preeti Faridkot was elected in the 2022 municipal election. In addition to serving as vice chair of the Board, she served as chair of the education plan committee and as vice-chair of the policy and governance committee.
Every year at the November Board meeting, the trustees select a chair and vice-chair to serve a one-year term running from December to November.
