LKDSB Educator Samantha Meredith Helps Keep the Story of the Chatham Coloured All-Stars Alive

October 19, 2026

For more than a decade, LKDSB educator Samantha Meredith has helped tell the story of the Chatham Coloured All-Stars, sharing the legacy of a groundbreaking team whose impact reaches far beyond the baseball diamond.

What began with a local history project grew into years of research, education and advocacy, driven by Meredith's belief that this remarkable piece of Chatham-Kent and Canadian history deserved to be known and remembered.

On October 15, that story reached another significant milestone as the Chatham Coloured All-Stars were inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. The recognition marks another chapter in the ongoing work to preserve and share the team's remarkable legacy, work to which Meredith has proudly contributed for over ten years.

Meredith's connection to the All-Stars began while she was serving as Curator and Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent Black Historical Society & Black Mecca Museum. During her first year there, the museum became involved in Breaking the Colour Barrier: Wilfred "Boomer" Harding & The Chatham Coloured All-Stars, a project that introduced Meredith to a story that would become an important part of her work for years to come.

"I immediately fell in love with the story and legacy of this group of players," said Meredith.

What Meredith did not know at the time was just how deeply involved she would become.

Following the launch of Breaking the Colour Barrier, Meredith contributed research to articles, books and documentaries and helped bring the story of the All-Stars into schools. With the creation of the All-Stars comic book, Meredith had opportunities to share the team's history directly with students, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, that reach expanded virtually to audiences across North America.

She was also involved with The Field of Honour, created with former Chatham resident Brock Greenhalgh and fellow LKDSB staff member and author Ian Kennedy as part of ongoing efforts to bring greater recognition to the team's story.

For Meredith, it was a story that brought together several things she cared deeply about.

"As someone who loves baseball and spends a lot of time at baseball games, this was an easy story for me to become interested in," said Meredith. "Mix it with history and social justice, two more things I find extremely important, and there was no way this wasn't going to be something I would be passionate about."

That passion eventually grew from helping tell the story to becoming involved in efforts seeking further recognition for the team.

In December 2022, Meredith submitted a nomination package for the Chatham Coloured All-Stars to the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, contributing to the ongoing effort to ensure the team and its historic accomplishments continued to receive recognition.

Today, Meredith brings that same passion for history, community and learning into her role as an educator at John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham.

"Our school community is so fortunate to have such a passionate educator in Sammi Meredith," said Principal Derek Quigley. "She is community-oriented, and enriches her classroom not only through her knowledge of the curriculum, but also by sharing the rich history of Chatham-Kent through her wealth of personal experiences. We are extremely proud of her dedication and the pivotal role she played in helping the historic accomplishments of the Chatham Coloured All-Stars be recognized with an induction into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame."

For LKDSB students, Meredith's story is a powerful example of what educators can bring to their classrooms beyond curriculum alone. Her years of research, community involvement and storytelling offer students a connection to the people, places and histories that have shaped the community around them.

The induction also provides another opportunity to introduce a new generation to the Chatham Coloured All-Stars and the barriers the players challenged through their accomplishments on and off the baseball field.

Meredith's work has helped keep their story alive through classrooms, books, research, presentations and conversations, alongside the work of families, historians, community members and others committed to preserving and sharing the All-Stars' legacy.

More than a decade after first being introduced to their story, Meredith continues to help ensure it reaches another generation.

And with the Chatham Coloured All-Stars now recognized by the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, another chapter has been added to the remarkable legacy of a team whose story continues to resonate far beyond the diamond.
