StFX University appoints the Hon. Lisa Raitt Chair, Board of Governors; welcomes six new members

St. Francis Xavier University has appointed the Honourable Lisa Raitt as Chair, Board of Governors, and is welcoming six new members to the board. Bios for StFX Board of Governors Chair the Hon. Lisa Raitt and new board members are posted below.

Lori-Ann Beausoleil, David Boyd, Mike Brien, Fr. Duaine Devereaux, and Wendy Wing have each commenced three year terms starting July 1, 2025. Brenda MacDonald joins the StFX Board of Governors on July 1, 2026.

New faculty representatives include education professor Dr. Wendy Mackey and Gerald Schwartz School of Business professor Dr. Brad Long. Kaleb Boates and Students' Union president Jacob Cruchet have started one year terms as student representatives.

Along with welcoming its new members, the StFX Board of Governors extends a sincere thank you to the outgoing board members for their many valued contributions to StFX, especially former board chair Dennis Flood. Additional outgoing members include Paul Ash; Marc Furlotte; Marie Walsh; Fr. Bill Burke; faculty representatives Dr. Lynda Harling Stalker and Dr. Peter Marzlin; and student members Avery Vadnai and Francisco Chang (former Students' Union president.)

The Hon. Lisa Raitt, P.C.

The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Vice-Chair, Global Investment Banking, CIBC Markets, joined CIBC Capital Markets in January 2020, having previously worked in both the public and private sectors. Ms. Raitt's focus is on senior client coverage and business development with clients in the energy, infrastructure and industrial sectors, which align closely with her expertise. Prior to her current role, Ms. Raitt was the President and CEO of the Toronto Port Authority. She was elected to the House of Commons in 2008, where she went on to hold three senior portfolios serving as Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Labour, and Minister of Transport. Ms. Raitt also served as the Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition and the Conservation Party of Canada. Ms. Raitt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from StFX and a master's degree in chemistry from the University of Guelph. She possessed an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario bar in 1998. In 2020, Ms. Raitt was named a Woodrow Wilson Centre Global Fellow of the Canada Institute. She serves as Co-Chair of the Coalition for a Better Future.

Lori-Ann Streete-Beausoleil, FCPA, FCA

Ms. Beausoleil is a corporate director and a retired Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP ("PwC"). Over her 35-year career at PwC, she held various leadership positions including National Leader - Compliance, Ethics and Governance, Real Estate Leader, National Forensic Services Leader and a member of PwC's Deals Leadership Team. She currently is a board member and Audit Committee Chair of Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust; Lead Director, board member and Audit Committee Chair of Brookfield Real Estate Income Trust Inc. (a private U.S. REIT); board member, Audit Committee member and Governance and Corporate Responsibility Committee member of Metro Inc.; and Lead Director, board member and Financial & Audit Committee Chair of Cboe Canada. She is also a member of the Canadian Chartered Professional Accountants and the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and is a CPA Ontario Fellow. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto.

David Boyd, FCPA, FCA, CIRP, LIT, ICD.D

David Boyd is a proud alumnus of St. Francis Xavier University, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He comes from a long line of family members who have attended and graduated from StFX, including two of his daughters. Mr. Boyd is an experienced financial advisor in distress corporate finance mandates with over 25 years' experience as a senior partner with PwC, 15 years as Leader of the Atlantic Corporate Distress and Aboriginal practice. Currently, he operates a boutique strategy consulting firm, Resolve Advisory Services, which provides transaction services, strategic support to private companies, and distress finance consulting. Mr. Boyd is also a strong community supporter, with board positions with CAA Atlantic, Special Olympics Nova Scotia, and Churchill Academy.

Mike Brien, FICB, CAIB, ICD.D

Mike Brien, a 1975 StFX business alumnus, started his career in banking. He rose to District Manager of Atlantic Canada and Ontario, before becoming Vice President Operations (and later COO) of a regional trust company. In 1985, he established a real estate and management services consulting practice. He later entered the insurance industry; eventually purchasing Confederation Life Insurance. After a major restructuring, the insurance brokerage operation was the major asset remaining which grew substantially and was sold to a public company consolidator. In 2001, Mr. Brien and ING Insurance formed a partnership. The company became a multi award-winning brokerage and one of the largest in Atlantic Canada. Mr. Brien retired in 2014. In 2025, he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame. Dedicated to his community, he has donated his time, as a JA mentor and in board and presidential positions with Nova Scotia Community College; Nova Scotia Community College Foundation; Mount Saint Vincent University; Insurance Brokers Association of Nova Scotia; YPO Atlantic; Northumberland Golf Club; and Basketball Nova Scotia. Mr. Brien received the StFX Lifetime Xaverian Patron Award; honorary alumni Mount Saint Vincent University; and The Frank Baldwin Award as a significant builder of basketball in Nova Scotia. He was an investor and volunteer CEO of the Halifax Hurricanes Professional Basketball Club, which brought a national professional championship to Halifax. He and his family have significantly contributed to StFX, Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, Nova Scotia Community College, NS Sports Hall of Fame, Mount St. Vincent University, Cystic Fibrosis, and many charities. He and his wife Beth have six children and 12 grandchildren.

Fr. Duaine Devereaux

Fr. Duaine Devereaux is a native of Sydney Mines, NS. He currently serves as Pastor Unité Pastoral Stella Maris Pastoral Unit, Isle Madame, Nova Scotia. Fr. Devereaux graduated from Memorial High School in Sydney Mines, NS and went on to earn a BA in history from StFX in 1985, followed in 1986 by a B.Ed. degree. Fr. Devereaux has also completed the French Immersion Programme at Université Ste Anne. He taught junior and senior high in British Columbia before entering St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto, Ontario 1988-1993 - MDiv (Toronto School of Theology - U of T); STB (St. Paul University, Ottawa). He was ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 1993, at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, NS. Fr. Devereaux has served in a number of parishes in Nova Scotia including at St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish; St. Peter's, Larry's River; St. Joseph's, Charlos Cove; and St. Joseph's, Port Felix, NS. Additionally, he has served parishes in Pictou County, Richmond County, Sydney River, and Glace Bay. He also served for seven years as Vice Rector, St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto, ON.

Wendy (Rankin) Wing

Wendy (Rankin) Wing has more than 30 years of experience and leadership in construction, finance, and administration, and has been involved in the development and financing of renewable energy projects including wind and hydro; as well as part of the development team for Rankin's real estate developments. Ms. Wing plays an important strategic role when analyzing new business opportunities and proposals and measures the long-term financial impact of these investments. She served on Niagara College's Board of Governors from 2016-22 and was Chair during the 2021-22 year. She is a graduate of the Ivey Business School at Western University and is a proud supporter of the Rankin Cancer Run. She and her husband Chris are the proud parents of two children.

Brenda MacDonald

Brenda MacDonald is Chief Commercial Officer at Ontario Power Generation (OPG). She and her team are responsible for structuring, negotiating and managing the strategic commercial relationships that support OPG's growth strategy, as well as all aspects of supply chain and procurement, including OPG's supply chain strategy supporting the company's nuclear and renewable generation operations, and growth and corporate functions. Ms. MacDonald is also responsible for Regulatory Affairs, helping develop and execute OPG's regulatory strategies and policies, and leading the company's interactions with economic regulators, market operators, and reliability organizations. She joined OPG in 2013 as Vice President, Law and General Counsel. In this role she was accountable for the oversight and management of OPG's legal affairs. In 2017, she took on the role of Vice President, Regulatory Affairs. Prior to joining OPG, she spent more than 15 years at Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE), holding various positions, including Assistant General Counsel for BCE's Business Markets and Procurement. She also served as counsel for Abitibi-Consolidated (now Resolute Forest Products). Ms. MacDonald received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from St. Francis Xavier University, and holds a Masters in Political Studies and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University. She currently serves as a board member for Laurentis Energy Partners, Canadian Nuclear Partners and Association of Corporate Counsel (Ontario Chapter).
