Alumni Relations proudly hosted an International Women's Day event on March 10, 2026, in partnership with the Fashion Exchange and the Fashion & Jewellery and Business Alumni Chapters. The gathering brought together alumni, students, and community members for a morning of inspiration, collaboration, and shared learning.
Special guests and community presence
Several special guests also attended the event, including members of the George Brown senior leadership team, industry partners, and students and graduates of the Women in Fashion Technology program. Among them was Senior Program Advisor Shernelle Daley-Wiltshire from the Office of Women's Social and Economic Opportunity, Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, whose presence underscored the deepening connection between education, industry, and government in advancing opportunities for women.
During the networking portion of the event, representatives from women-owned apparel companies many of whom produce their products at the Fashion Exchange were on-site to showcase their work in the client displays. Their participation highlighted the vital role of women entrepreneurs in Toronto's fashion ecosystem and celebrated the impact of community-driven, sustainable production.
Inspiring conversations with alumni entrepreneurs
A lively panel discussion anchored the event, featuring alumni entrepreneurs Rachel Ott, Stephanie Joseph-Flatts, and Sabrina Harding, who shared personal reflections on how supporting others has shaped their professional journeys and personal growth. Their stories underscored the importance of mentorship, giving back, community, and collaboration in building meaningful careers.
Unveiling the 2026 International Women's Day Scarf
The morning also included the unveiling of the 2026 International Women's Day Scarf, designed by Fashion Techniques and Design student Erica Aversa, who is currently in her final semester.
Inspired by this year's theme, "Give to Gain: Volunteerism and Supporting Others," the scarf symbolizes empowerment, mentorship, and community support. Produced by the Fashion Exchange using sustainable practices and dye sublimation printing, the piece reflects George Brown's ongoing commitment to innovation and responsible fashion production.
"International Women's Day is a powerful reminder that when we uplift one another, we create opportunities for growth, innovation, and meaningful change," said Dr. Ana Rita Morais, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Creative Industries and Culinary Arts, underscoring the impact of women supporting women and the transformative role of mentorship within the George Brown community. "It was inspiring to hear our alumni entrepreneurs share how mentorship and community have shaped their journeys, and to see our students' creativity reflected in Erica Aversa's beautiful scarf design. Events like this truly demonstrate the strength of the George Brown community and the impact we can have when we support each other."
