Following the release of Alberta's Provincial Budget 2026, Parkland School Division (PSD) is pleased to announce that the Government of Alberta has greenlit design funding for a major capital priority: the modernization or replacement of Brookwood School.
Originally identified as Year One, Priority Two in the Board-approved 2025-2028 Three-Year Capital Plan, this funding marks the first critical step in revitalizing one of Spruce Grove's long-standing educational hubs. PSD Administration will now move forward and begin working with Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure to determine the next steps in this exciting project.
A key component of this design phase involves an evaluation under the provincial Major Capital Projects framework. This technical analysis will determine if the cost of a comprehensive modernization exceeds the specific provincial threshold required to trigger a full replacement. As was the case with the Spruce Grove Composite High School project, this ensures that the final path chosen whether a modernization or a brand-new build is the most fiscally responsible.
"This acceleration to design funding is a tremendous win for our community," says Board Chair, Dr. Lorraine Stewart.
"We aren't just looking at bricks and mortar; we are looking at how our facilities can best support student success for the next fifty years."
"Our Board acknowledges that getting to design funding is a community effort, and appreciates all advocacy, including that of our Spruce Grove-Stony Plain MLA Turton, that makes it possible to move towards what will be an exciting and much needed state-of-the-art facility for the community."
The design phase includes the exciting work of collaborating with architects and engineers to create full technical blueprints, refining cost estimates and determining the next best steps (modernization or replacement) while preparing the facility for the next fifty years of success. Moving through the design phase will ensure that the project will be shovel-ready, positioning Brookwood to move seamlessly into the construction phase once future funding is allocated by the province.
The Government of Alberta made the announcement with a new wave of school project announcements.
