With the Alberta government legislating its teachers back to work this week, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association is calling on its members and the public to show support for colleagues in Alberta who have been on strike since October 6, 2025.
"When teachers stand up for better learning and teaching conditions, they are standing up for every child in their classroom," said Dale Lambe, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association. "The NLTA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in Alberta who are fighting for the supports their students need to succeed. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, our teachers are experiencing similar pressures, growing class sizes, increasing student needs, violence in the classroom and not enough resources to address them. As we enter our own round of contract negotiations in the months ahead, we are reminded that supporting teachers means supporting education and that is an investment in our future."
Back-to-work legislation undermines the right to a fair collective bargaining process. When any government uses legislation to end a strike, they silence the voices of workers instead of addressing the issues that brought them to the table.
"We hope the newly elected Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government is carefully watching the situation unfolding in Alberta and does not make the same mistake as it prepares to bargain with its public sector unions in this province," said President Lambe. "Our teachers are the backbone of our society and deserve a fair and free collective bargaining process that recognizes the importance of education to the economic and social future of this province."
The NLTA is encouraging members and the public to wear red in support of Alberta's teachers, post that support online and use the below social media profile picture to send a clear message investing in teaching is investing in our future.
