ALGOMA UNIVERSITY
Algoma University Celebrates Historic Naming of the Cameron Faculty of Sciences

June 16, 2025

Algoma University proudly marked a milestone moment on June 13 with a special recognition event celebrating the naming of the Cameron Faculty of Science. This historic designation - approved by the University's Board of Governors - marks the first faculty naming in the institution's history, signifying a transformative step in advancing science education and innovation in Northern Ontario.

The event welcomed members of the Cameron family, who travelled to Sault Ste. Marie to be honoured for their generous support. Held at the Convergence Centre on the Sault campus, the gathering brought together students, faculty, staff, and members of the Board of Governors to commemorate the Cameron family's extraordinary contribution.

"My father, Dr. J. MacBain Cameron, was a man of quiet strength, deep integrity, and unwavering dedication to both science and education," shared Peter Cameron. "Bain, as he was fondly known to many, never sought recognition, but I know he would be profoundly honoured by this meaningful tribute. To have the Faculty of Science at Algoma University bear his name is a profoundly meaningful tribute - not only to his pioneering work as an entomologist, but also to his role in shaping the early vision of this institution. He believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and in building strong, resilient communities through knowledge and discovery. This recognition affirms the values he held dear and ensures his legacy will continue to inspire generations of students for years to come. Our family is truly grateful to Algoma University for this enduring honour."

The naming of the Cameron Faculty of Science stands as a tribute to the Cameron family's vision and belief in the power of education to transform lives and uplift communities across Northern Ontario and beyond - a powerful testament to the role of philanthropy in shaping the future of postsecondary education in the region.

"The Cameron family has made an extraordinary contribution that significantly advances Algoma University's vision for accessible, inclusive, and future-focused education," shared Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Donna Rogers. "Their generosity will enrich the academic journey of both current and future students while empowering the University to lead in research, innovation, and scientific discovery."

The event featured remarks from Algoma University leadership, a ceremonial unveiling of the newly named faculty, and a private reception with students and faculty from the sciences. This momentous recognition underscores the University's ongoing commitment to expanding research capacity, strengthening academic excellence, and deepening community partnerships.

"Today marks a bold new chapter for Algoma University," said Colin Wilson, Director of Strategic Advancement. "The naming of the Cameron Faculty of Science is more than a recognition; it's a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations of students, researchers, and innovators. We are deeply honoured by the Cameron family's generosity and commitment to advancing science education in the North."
