HURON-SUPERIOR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
HSCDSB Mourns the Passing of Trustee Gary Trembinski

October 14, 2025

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Trustee Gary Trembinski, a dedicated and faith-filled member of the Board who served for 11 years, including as Board Chair from 2022 to 2024.

Gary's passion for helping others was evident in every part of his life. A former Sault Ste. Marie City Councillor, he cared deeply for the most vulnerable in our community. His compassion for students with special education needs inspired him to seek election as a Catholic school board trustee, and ultimately to serve on the Special Education Advisory Committee.

A lifelong community builder, Gary was a founding member of the Queen Street Cruise and played an instrumental role in bringing the air shows of the 1980s to Sault Ste. Marie. He also gave his time to countless community organizations, including the Kiwanis Club and Bon Soo Winter Carnival. Many knew him as the proud owner of Metallo's Mini Mart, which was not just his workplace but a gathering place where he could hear from the community.

"It was my honour to serve with Gary since his election to the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board in 2014. Gary was passionate about Catholic education and always focused on doing what was right for all children in our schools. His dedication and leadership will be greatly missed by all of us on the Board. May he rest in God's peace," said Sandra Turco, Board Chair.

"Gary's commitment to education and to our community was unwavering. He was instrumental in helping me navigate the early days of my role as Director of Education, and his counsel was invaluable. We will all miss his dedication and his tireless support for students, staff, and families," said Fil Lettieri, Director of Education.

Gary's leadership and devotion to students, families, and staff reflected his faith and his belief in the mission of Catholic education. Above all, his family was the most important thing to him, and he cherished them deeply. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of sorrow.
