Every year, the sale of Tim Hortons Smile Cookies supports various local causes and this week, Surrey's Hyland Elementary will receive the cookie proceeds from seven Tim Hortons locations, helping to fund a new playground at the school.
"All playgrounds have a shelf life and ours has reached its end-of-life," said Hyland vice-principal Edward Carter. "Our playground is frequently used by our K-7 students during the school day, but also by community groups and families outside of school hours."
With a new playground estimated to cost $230,000, Carter is hopeful the cookie campaign will help move the school closer to its goal.
"We've been fundraising all year and the current playground is set to be removed this summer," he said. "While we've had a positive response from the community in our fundraising efforts so far, we're still short of our target but we're hopeful this campaign will move us closer to that goal."
Students from Hyland Elementary visited one of the seven locations this week to help decorate Smile Cookies. The Hyland Elementary team at one of the seven Tim Hortons locations helping to raise funds for the school's playground.
"It's a great way for us to get out into the community and put a face to the campaign," said Carter. "We're so grateful to Tim Hortons for selecting us to be the beneficiary and we're thankful to everyone in the community who buys a cookie to help us with our playground."
