Students from the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) ran alongside those from French Catholic, French public, and independent schools, showing determination and strength of character throughout the day.
Event convenor and SMCDSB Athletic Program Lead Jayme Davis said the meet was designed to give younger students an opportunity to compete at a higher level. "Our junior students don't always get the same athletic experiences as older grades," she said. "This event gives them a chance to be part of a team, to challenge themselves, and to build confidence through sport."
Superintendent Scot Gorecki said the day captured what student athletics are all about. "We've got nearly 800 athletes here today with their families and supporters cheering them on, and the weather even cooperated," he said. "It's very competitive, but what stands out most is the perseverance and character the students show as they run. You can see the hard work they've put into their training."
Throughout the day, students displayed determination and sportsmanship, celebrating each other's efforts no matter their placement.
The championship marks the first county-wide athletic event of the 2025-26 school year, kicking off a full season that will include co-ed flag football, girls' basketball, and boys' volleyball in the months ahead.
