ALGONQUIN COLLEGE
College Community Gathers on Earth Day to Celebrate New Scholarship for Learners in Environmental Sustainability Programs

April 23, 2025

Members of the Algonquin College community gathered on Earth Day to celebrate the creation of a new endowed fund. Mrs. Hazel M. Patterson has donated $120,000 to establish an endowed scholarship that will support learners in programs that focus on environmental sustainability. The Hazel Smart-Patterson Environmental Scholarship will be awarded annually to two learners in one of the following programs:

Mrs. Patterson, a distinguished alumna of Algonquin College's Business Management program, has contributed to bursaries and scholarships at Algonquin College for 17 years. In fact, the Hazel Smart-Patterson Environmental Scholarship is her third endowment to the College. Her first two endowed funds, the Hazel Smart-Patterson Bursary and the Hazel Smart-Patterson Scholarship, have supported and encouraged women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) since 2008 and 2023, respectively.

"Education is transformative, and transformation is what we need in our relationship with our natural environment," said Mrs. Patterson. "My hope for this scholarship is to equip and empower hard-working learners to successfully tackle issues of environmental sustainability, which consist of some of the toughest challenges of our time."

"Many learners in these programs will benefit from Mrs. Patterson's generosity," said Mark Savenkoff, Vice-President, Advancement and Strategy at Algonquin College. "This new endowed scholarship supports learners, promotes environmental responsibility, and elevates our whole community. This Earth Day, we deeply appreciate the opportunity to deepen our collaboration with Mrs. Patterson and work together for a better world."
