ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE
SLC Obtains Certification to Train Millwright Apprentices in Cornwall

April 30, 2025

St. Lawrence College is working to bring trades and apprenticeship training to Cornwall to help address the projected retirement of 700,000 skilled tradespeople across Canada by 2028, and the increasing demand for trained Millwrights in Eastern Ontario. The college is proud to announce its Cornwall campus has obtained Training Delivery Agent (TDA) status for its Industrial Mechanic Millwright program.

"Congratulations to St. Lawrence College on becoming an official training partner for the Industrial Mechanic Millwright Training Delivery Agent," said David Piccini, Ontario's Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. " Training Delivery Agents like this give apprentices hands-on experience and will help build our skilled trades workforce by training the next generation of millwrights right here in Eastern Ontario."

A Training Delivery Agent is approved by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to provide the in-class training component of an apprenticeship program. With this TDA approval, local millwright apprentices can attend trade school in Cornwall, saving them the expense and time lost to travelling outside the area to develop their skills.

"We are excited to help deliver this advancement in trades education for Cornwall," said Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College. "We have a long history of serving the post-secondary needs of Eastern Ontario and this approval from the Ministry recognizes the important contributions made by tradespeople to the economy - and the need to increase their numbers. We are grateful for the ongoing partnership between SLC and the government to train the talent Ontario's workforce needs."

Daniel Liao, SLC's Dean for the Faculty of Trades and Technology said "Millwrights do incredibly important work that keeps industrial employers and the equipment they use in safe, effective shape. Trades such as these hold up the local economy and we take the responsibility of training apprentices seriously at our college. Our faculty and facilities are ready to welcome new apprentices and deliver the trained tradespeople local employers need."

The Training Delivery Agent status is an important step in ensuring SLC can continue to partner with local employers to train apprentices for in-demand trades.
