Students in George Brown Polytechnic's Supply Chain Management postgraduate program traded the classroom for the warehouse floor on March 10, gaining firsthand insight into how modern distribution networks operate during a guided tour of Stone Tile International's 125,000,000-square-foot Toronto distribution centre.
This behind-the-scenes look at a busy facility offered a tangible opportunity to turn classroom theory into real experience.
Classroom concepts meet real operations
As students entered Stone Tile's expansive warehouse, they witnessed how tiles and flooring products are stored, handled, and moved with precision. From inventory management to quality-control processes, each step demonstrated how supply chain principles come to life in a real operational setting.
The distribution centre serves a wide range of clients, including architectural firms, contractors, and retail customers. This variety provided students with a clear understanding of the co-ordination, timing, and logistics needed to meet different customer demands across the supply chain.
Throughout the tour, students showed strong curiosity asking detailed questions, linking course concepts, and exploring how their learning applies directly to a fast-paced industry.
Guided by industry experts
The experience was organized by Supply Chain Program Co-ordinator Sam Lampropoulos, who highlighted the importance of practical learning for student development.
"Experiences like this are where real learning happens," Lampropoulos said. "When students walk into a live distribution centre, talk to industry professionals, and witness the complexity of operations firsthand, the theory stops being theoretical it becomes something they can see, question, and connect to their future careers."
The tour was led by David Wang, Director of National Warehousing at Stone Tile International and a part-time instructor at George Brown. His dual role industry leader and educator provided students with valuable insights into the evolving field of supply chain management.
