Student and donor gatherings highlight the impact of financial support and community investment
Over 600 Georgian College students are pursuing their education with fewer financial barriers, thanks to $1.7 million in donor-funded scholarships, awards and bursaries distributed over the past academic year.
That impact was brought to life recently at Georgian's signature student and donor socials, Gather and Grow, where award recipients and donors came together to connect, share stories and see firsthand how donor-funded awards are opening doors and shaping student success at Georgian.
Donor-funded awards are a vital part of a broader financial aid program at Georgian designed to expand access and support student success. Each year, students have access to nearly $7 million in assistance to help them focus more fully on their studies and achieve their academic goals.
"Donor contributions do far more than provide financial assistance. They create opportunities, remove barriers and empower students to pursue their goals. For many, this support is the difference between hoping for an education and accessing one. It allows students to focus on their learning and growth while building stronger communities as they become the next generation of leaders and changemakers," said Georgian College President and CEO Kevin Weaver.
Among the speakers at the events was Alex Eveleigh, a second-year student in Georgian's Electrical Engineering Technician program and recipient of the prestigious Schulich Builders Scholarship, who shared the impact of receiving a scholarship.
"Before graduating high school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do next. What made a difference for me was the feeling that someone believed in me and my success. As a student, the support I've received through my scholarship has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. It has allowed me to focus on learning, building my skills and gaining hands-on experience. Because of donors, I've been able to pursue this passion with the knowledge that I have people who support and believe in me," said Alex.
