Breaking Barriers and Building Futures: Cambrian College hosts annual Jill of All Trades event

There are careers for the taking in skilled trades and engineering technology, and female high school students are being encouraged to go after them.

Cambrian College held its annual Jill of All Trades event on campus this week.

Approximately 200 female high school students from Greater Sudbury, North Bay, and Serpent River First Nation spent the day trying out several of the trades offered on campus, including auto mechanics, carpentry, civil engineering, electrical, heavy equipment, mechatronics, millwright, power engineering, powerline technician, and welding.

Jill of All Trades is designed to build confidence, challenge stereotypes, and introduce students to rewarding, in-demand career pathways where women have historically been under-represented.

"Jill of All Trades is about opening doors and changing perceptions," says Renee Scott, Cambrian's Director of Marketing, Recruitment, and Student Success "When young women step into our labs, pick up the tools, and see themselves succeeding in these environments, it can be transformational. We want them to leave knowing there are no limits to what they can pursue."

As industries across Northern Ontario continue to face skilled labour shortages, events such as Jill of All Trades play an important role in building awareness of high-demand careers that offer strong earning potential, long-term stability, and meaningful work.
