HUMBER POLYTECHNIC
Humber Graduate Mark Cameron Receives Order of Canada in Ottawa Ceremony

October 9, 2026

For more than 35 years, Mark Cameron has dedicated his life to helping others, whether responding to emergencies in rural Ontario or delivering medical aid in some of the world's most challenging humanitarian crises. Originally announced in June 2024, the Humber Polytechnic graduate received the Order of Canada honour in an October 2 ceremony, further recognizing a career defined by courage, compassion and service.

A graduate of Humber's Paramedic program in 1989, Cameron has built an international reputation as a paramedic, educator and humanitarian leader. In 2024, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours, in recognition of his contributions to health care, education and humanitarian relief.

At the centre of Cameron's work is the Canadian International Medical Relief Organization (CIMRO), which he co-founded and serves as co-president. The organization delivers medical supplies, training and emergency support to civilians and children affected by conflict and disaster in countries including Syria, Ukraine and Guyana.

Following the ceremony, Cameron told Humber Today, "to even be present in a crowd of people as esteemed and distinguished as the group here today at the Order of Canada, makes me feel particularly inadequate to be honest. But, when I reflect on some of the things that CIMRO Canada has accomplished, it's really me here standing on the shoulders of hundreds of incredible, talented young people that have helped us accomplish a lot of this. Being recognized with some of these other folks for a lifetime achievement-type award is special beyond words."

Among CIMRO's most significant achievements was helping eradicate a polio outbreak in Syria through the distribution of more than 1.4 million vaccines to children. The organization has also trained frontline health-care providers, monitored infectious diseases, and strengthened local health-care systems in conflict zones.

"From a Humber student learning the fundamentals of emergency care to a globally respected humanitarian saving lives and advancing medical education, Cameron's journey stands as a powerful example of leadership, service and humanity in action," said Ann Marie Vaughan, president and CEO, Humber Polytechnic.

For Cameron, humanitarian work is grounded in a simple philosophy. "On these trips, there are no enemies, there are patients," he said when reflecting on CIMRO's mission to provide care wherever it is needed.

His commitment to service extends beyond international relief efforts. In 2011, Cameron risked his own life to rescue a child trapped in farm machinery near Havelock, Ontario, earning the Governor General's Medal of Bravery. His humanitarian work has also been recognized by the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the Canadian and British governments. In 2017, he and his CIMRO co-founders received a Meritorious Service Medal for their work supporting civilians affected by conflict.

Today, Cameron continues to advance health-care education as Program Lead for advanced life support education at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He has also taught at Humber, Centennial College, the Michener Institute and Stony Brook University, helping prepare future generations of health-care professionals.

Throughout his career, Cameron has credited Humber's hands-on training with preparing him for the challenges he would encounter around the world.

"Humber has the best paramedic program in Canada," Cameron said following his 2024 Order of Canada appointment. "When I was vaccinating children in a warzone, it was that same Humber experience that taught me to push through the challenges and find solutions."

For the Humber community, Cameron's Order of Canada honour celebrates an alumnus whose impact extends far beyond borders.
