Leaners from Algonquin College's Community and Justice Services (CJS) program will spend 24 hours outdoors at Minto Park on Oct. 16 and 17 as part of the annual 24 Hours of Homelessness experiential learning and charity fundraiser. The event raises funds and awareness for unhoused youth while providing students with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
Beginning at noon on Friday, Oct. 16 and continuing until noon on Saturday, Oct. 17, Community and Justice Services students will engage with members of the public, share information about homelessness in Ottawa and encourage donations in support of the cause. They will also spend the night outside, going through what the unhoused community experiences.
Now in its sixteenth year, Community and Justice Services students have raised more than $50,000 to support individuals and organizations working to address homelessness and related challenges in the community. This year's fundraiser will direct 65 per cent of proceeds to Operation Come Home Youth Services and 35 per cent to the CJS Emergency Student Bursary and support.
"Each year, this proves to be one of the most impactful learning experiences for our students because it brings the realities of homelessness and housing insecurity into sharp focus," said Cat Baron, professor, Police and Public Safety Institute. "By fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the barriers many people face, the experience helps prepare learners to serve vulnerable populations with compassion, respect and informed practice throughout their careers."
The annual event combines fundraising with education, encouraging conversations about homelessness, poverty and the importance of community support. Through direct engagement with the public, students are challenged to reflect on how social, economic and systemic factors affect those who lack access to stable housing, food security and other necessities.
Members of the public are encouraged to visit the students at Minto Park and support the fundraiser through the event's GoFundMe campaign. Donations will help provide essential services and support for youth and students facing adversity.
