Lethbridge Polytechnic will offer a new Interior and Building Design Technology (IBT) diploma beginning in fall 2027, combining its Architectural Animation Technology (AAT) and Interior Design Technology (IDT) diplomas into one all-encompassing program.
"The IBT program is designed to prepare graduates for increasingly complex design and building projects, combining elements of architectural and interior design and technology into a comprehensive educational experience," says Brenda Brandley, chair, School of Spatial Design Technologies. "This new program is designed to equip learners with the skills and experiences they need to shape our communities and succeed in their careers."
New areas of focus for the IBT program include kitchen and bath design, architecture studies, advanced technology and building systems and code, all of which ensure students are prepared to work in a wide array of industry careers upon graduation.
These additions build on the program's existing strengths including studio classes in residential and commercial design, using industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Sketchup and Enscape, and engaging with work-integrated learning opportunities and valuable practicum experiences so students can apply their skills to real-world situations.
Students currently enrolled in AAT and IDT will be the final cohort of those programs in their current format and, upon successful completion, will receive their respective credential ready to enter the workforce.
"Current students and recent graduates can be assured there continues to be employment opportunities in the fields represented by the AAT and IDT programs," says Brandley. "We look forward to working with our students to support them through this transition and as they complete their programs."
Lethbridge Polytechnic's IBT program is the third new program offering announced this year, alongside Pre-Veterinary Medicine and more recently, a Primary Care Paramedic diploma program. New programs in trades, health care and technologies are also being developed. Visit lethpolytech.ca/new-programs for details.
