The government is investing $7.24 million to add a fourth step to the early childhood educator wage grid.
"Early childhood educators play a vital role in shaping young minds, supporting families and building stronger communities," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson. "Wage increases are essential to retain and attract skilled professionals, reduce turnover and ensure children receive consistent, high-quality care and education during their most formative years."
The step being added to the grid effective Sept. 16 reflects a 5.5 per cent increase from step 3 for level 1 educators, and a 6.0 per cent increase from step 3 for entry-level educators. There will be no changes to the operator's base wage contribution. The increase will be fully funded by the provincial government.
Steps for entry-level educators:
- step 1: $16.83 per hour
- step 2: $17.86 per hour
- step 3: $18.95 per hour
- step 4: $20.08 per hour
Steps for level 1 educators:
- step 1: $23.29 per hour
- step 2: $24.57 per hour
- step 3: $25.91 per hour
- step 4: $27.33 per hour
Educators may move up one step on the wage grid annually based on their experience.
"I want to thank all early childhood educators for their continued dedication and the meaningful impact they have on children and families every day," said Johnson. "This wage increase is one step forward in our ongoing effort to support the early learning and child-care workforce."
The department will communicate more information to operators directly.
This announcement aligns with the government's commitment to retain early childhood educators by improving working conditions and increasing wages.
