NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
School Lunch Programming Reaching Thousands More Students

September 15, 2025

The Provincial Government is making progress in expanding access to school lunches for students. At the end of the 2024-25 school year, 22,000 students had access to the pay-what-you-can model. In fall 2025, a further 12,000 students will be added. A request for proposals will be issued soon for further school lunch expansion to occur this winter.

The Provincial Government is also working with the NunatuKavut Community Council and the Nunatsiavut Government to support expansion of school lunch programming in those jurisdictions.

It is anticipated that approximately 40,000 students will have access to the pay-what-you-can school lunch model by the end of the 2025-26 school year.

In Budget 2025, $24 million was announced for the continued expansion of school food programming to all pre-kindergarten and K-9 schools in the province, bringing the total investment to $42 million.

Quote

"We know that investing in our young people is investing in the future of our province. Ensuring that more kids have access to nutritious food in schools is making a meaningful difference for families throughout our communities and will affect many more in the coming months. We are proud to be one of the leaders nationally with this important programming for our students."

Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development
