OTTAWA-CARLETON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Mental Health Matters: OCDSB Champions Kick Off a Year of Action

December 18, 2025

This fall, students from across the OCDSB gathered at the Confederation Education Centre for a dynamic Mental Health Champions event, focusing on the theme, Mental Health Matters. Students came together to connect and explore fresh, effective ways to promote mental health and well-being in their school communities.

Champion voices lead the way

The day kicked off with messages from current Mental Health Champions and members of the Youth Action Committee. Our Champions are crucial leaders who organize events and campaigns designed to demystify mental health, highlight its importance, and explain how to access support. They work to build a stronger sense of community by teaming up with clubs and creating welcoming spaces where all students feel comfortable getting involved.

Learning, resources, and connection

OCDSB Mental Health staff provided a deep dive into important topics, like managing stress, tackling stigma, understanding how discrimination affects mental health, and finding practical ways to improve well-being. They also shared guidance on where and how to seek support.

A vital part of the day was the Community Resource Fair, which allowed the Champions to meet representatives from various local services and organizations, equipping them with a bigger network of resources to share with their peers. Students also participated in mental health labs focused on goal setting, creativity, mindfulness, and gratitude.

The Champions participated in interactive games and a photo scavenger hunt, building connections with their peers as they got ready for the main part of the day: planning for the year ahead.

From ideas to action

Students collaborated to identify the unique strengths and successes in their school communities. Then, they set "big picture" goals to build belonging and connect more students with support. Finally, they translated these goals into action plans, coming up with creative events and initiatives. The Champions learned from each other, as they discussed strategies for team communication, student engagement, and how to look after their own well-being.

As the day wrapped up, the message was clear: this event was just the beginning of the work ahead. Throughout the fall, our Champions have been putting their plans into action, and we look forward to celebrating their achievements at our Spring Show and Share. This dynamic kick-off set the stage for a year where students demonstrate that Mental Health Matters in every OCDSB school.
