Nearly 200 Grade 1-6 teachers in Red Deer Public Schools recently came together over several weeks for a Division-wide curriculum refresh focused on strengthening classroom practice and ensuring students benefit from the most up to date learning resources.
Led by the Division's Learning Services Coordinators, the collaborative sessions focused on mathematics, language arts, social studies, First Nations, Metis and Inuit education, and French Immersion programming. The work centred on aligning teaching practices with current curriculum requirements, while equipping teachers with updated tools, resources and shared strategies to support student success.
"This curriculum refresh represents our commitment to ensure excellence in teaching and learning in every classroom," said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent for Red Deer Public Schools. "By investing in our teachers and ensuring they have the most current resources and a shared understanding of curriculum expectations, we are directly supporting positive outcomes for students."
The sessions provided time for teachers to review updated materials, collaborate with colleagues across schools, and deepen their understanding of curriculum changes. For students this means consistent, engaging instruction that is grounded in current best practices and culturally responsive approaches.
"When teachers have the opportunity to learn together, share expertise, and access updated resources together, the impact is felt immediately in the classroom," said Dan. "Students benefit from cohesive programming, strong instructional practices and educators who are confident and well-supported in delivering the curriculum in their classrooms."
The curriculum refresh also supports staff by creating alignment across schools, reducing duplication of effort and fostering professional collaboration.
