The Council for School Leadership (CSL) Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes outstanding school leaders who excel in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students and staff. It is given by the CSL, in partnership with the Alberta Teacher's Association. Each leader highlighted here was nominated by a peer or community member, and the following profiles reflect the perspectives shared in those nominations.

Aliki Avdicos - Elboya School
With over a decade of service as a principal, Aliki Avdicos leads with steadiness, care, and an unwavering focus on student well-being and achievement. She has guided her school community through significant change, including reconfiguration to a middle school and major modernization, while maintaining high expectations and a strong sense of support for students, staff, and families. Known for her approachable nature and deep relationships, she fosters an inclusive environment where every student feels valued.
Jana Macdonald - Bowness High School
Jana Macdonald's leadership is shaped by a focus on instruction, community advocacy, and mentorship to foster a thriving school environment. At Bowness High School, she has sustained the school's unique identity as a "town-within-a-city," reflecting both the school's heritage and the values of the surrounding community. Her approachable presence and visible engagement attending student events, supporting programs, and prioritizing well-being have fostered a culture in which students feel valued, empowered, and academically motivated.
Angela McPhee - Evergreen School
With a steady focus on both excellence and care, Angela leads Evergreen School, where high expectations are matched with strong relationships and a deep sense of belonging. Respected for her integrity, empathy, and calm decision-making, she leads with both heart and expertise. Her schools are characterized by strong staff morale, engaged families, and students who feel seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Dr. Ruth Papoff - Rundle School
Dr. Ruth Papoff's leadership is defined by compassion, clarity, and a deep commitment to student success. At Rundle School, she fosters safe, inclusive, and respectful environments through collaboration, restorative practices, and strong community partnerships. Her relationship-centred approach builds trust, strengthens inclusive and evidence-informed practices, and supports students and staff to belong, thrive, and contribute to a connected school community.
Michelle Ranger - System Principal, Indigenous Education
Rooted in her identity as a proud Métis educator, Michelle Ranger brings a relational and holistic approach to leadership that honours Spirit, Heart, Body, and Mind. As System Principal of Indigenous Education, she fosters meaningful collaboration with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and educators, ensuring Indigenous perspectives are authentically embedded in learning. Her work strengthens a culture of trust, respect, and shared responsibility, creating conditions where Indigenous students and communities are supported to thrive.
