GREATER ESSEX COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Project SEARCH Interns Celebrate Graduation at St. Clair College

June 19, 2026

On June 10, 2026, the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) and St. Clair College proudly gathered with the 2025-2026 Project SEARCH interns, their families, staff, and community partners to celebrate a significant milestone: graduation from the Project SEARCH program.

Project SEARCH is an internationally recognized transition-to-work program designed for young adults with developmental disabilities. The program promotes inclusion, creates meaningful employment opportunities, and supports successful transitions into adulthood. This year, eight interns from across the GECDSB participated in the program at St. Clair College, made possible through the Ministry of Education's Breaking Barriers Grant.

The graduation ceremony highlighted not only the accomplishments of the student interns, but also the strong partnerships that helped make the program a success. Special recognition was given to education coordinators Jenn Newton, Catherine Collins, and Bianca Rota, whose vision and dedication helped bring the program to life.

The Board also expressed its gratitude to President Michael Silvaggi and Jimmy Parsons, Chair of the Zekelman School of Business, along with the teams at St. Clair College and the manager mentors who provided leadership, support, and authentic internship opportunities throughout the year. Their commitment created meaningful workplace experiences that allowed students to develop valuable skills and confidence.

Thanks were also extended to Community Living Windsor and Community Living Essex County for their collaboration and partnership, as well as to GECDSB CEO Vicki Houston and the Board's senior leadership team for their ongoing support of the initiative.

Recognition was also given to Principal Matt Sanders, teacher Sue Sovran, and student support workers Anna Lisa Fusaro and Sloane Crease for their unwavering dedication, care, and commitment to the student interns throughout the year.

Reflecting on the program's impact, Superintendent of Special Education Chris Mills shared:

"Throughout the year I found myself talking about Project Search constantly. I use this group as an example again and again, because when we presume confidence and intentionally build independence, and when we focus on developing real skills, great things happen. That's exactly what we have seen happen here. At the beginning of the year, many of these students were quiet, and unsure, settling into something new. Today we see confident young adults. Individuals who contribute, take initiative and believe in their own potential."

One of the most moving parts of the evening came when each graduate took the stage to share a personal speech. The interns reflected on their journeys, expressed gratitude to those who supported them, and shared their hopes and dreams for the future.

There was not a dry eye in the room.

Attendees were also treated to a year-end video showcasing the interns' experiences throughout the program. The video featured interviews with staff, students and family members, who spoke candidly about their initial fears and uncertainties and their amazement at the growth, confidence, and independence each student developed over the course of the year.

The graduation served as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when schools, community organizations, families, and employers work together to support student success.

The Greater Essex County District School Board extends its sincere congratulations to the Project SEARCH graduates and looks forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years ahead.

Evenings such as this, where the dedication and care of staff, the commitment of community partners, and the achievements of outstanding students are on full display represent the very best of the work we do at the GECDSB.
