The Manitoba government is investing $50,000 through the From the Ground Up - Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program to support The Pas Community Renewal Corporation, in developing and delivering after-school programming, including hiring staff, purchasing equipment, supplies and bundle boxes, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
"Our government is proud to support the important work of the Pas Community Renewal Corporation," said Simard. "By investing in after-school programming, we are helping create safe, healthy spaces where children and youth can learn, grow and stay connected to their community. These programs not only provide meaningful activities and mentorship, but they also remove barriers so that all families, regardless of income, can participate."
The Pas Community Renewal Corporation organizes programming and events, including the Annual Summer Street Festival, Santa Claus Parade, Be a Santa to a Senior and a community calendar that is distributed to local businesses and displayed in the community newspaper, job training workshops, and cultural programming. All programming and activities are organized to be barrier-free, allowing all ages and low-income families the opportunity to participate.
"By receiving From the Ground Up funding, The Pas Community Renewal Corporation will be able to support barrier-free after-school programming for children that celebrates culture, strengthens community connections and provides children with safe, engaging spaces to explore and learn." said Holly LaJambe, interim executive director, The Pas Community Renewal Corporation. "The children's bundle boxes we plan to develop through this support will contain traditional knowledge and language books, educational materials, and the recorded voices of local elders and knowledge keepers, preserving traditional knowledge while making it accessible to the next generation. Together, the initiatives of this project, Gathering of Children's Bundles, represent a lasting and practical way to put reconciliation into action one that honours Indigenous knowledge, empowers young people and strengthens relationships throughout our community for years to come."
The From the Ground Up - Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program supports the Manitoba government's commitment to build safe, healthy communities where individuals, children, youth and families can thrive, the minister noted.
The program provides application-based project funding to support a broad range of community renewal efforts, community capital projects and children and youth initiatives. It focuses on community-led response and revitalization efforts, including capacity building, wellness and safety, community economic development, social inclusion, housing co-ordination and children and youth initiatives. The program leverages investments in community development by local governments, non-profit organizations and others.
