Safety and resilience during an emergency remain a top priority for the Delta School District. Every year at each school, students and staff routinely practice the initial 5 to 10 minutes of life-safety response actions through a variety of drills, including evacuation, earthquake, lockdown, and hold-and-secure. However, what happens after these initial actions depends entirely on the severity of the event.
The Next Step: Student Reunification
Reunification of students with their parents and caregivers is the foundational first step in the post-incident recovery process. In most cases, schools can handle emergency responses with little to no external support.
There are other circumstances, however, where a situation may require parents to pick up their students through a highly formalized, controlled release. In the event of a large-scale or high-profile incident, the school district, emergency services, and the City of Delta are prepared to mount a coordinated and strategic response to support the affected school.
Joint Training for a Unified Response
To ensure this coordinated response is seamless, rigorous training is an essential part of the district's emergency preparedness program.
Earlier this year, the Delta School District hosted an advanced training session facilitated by the internationally recognized "I Love U Guys" Foundation. Representatives from the Delta Police Department, Delta Fire & Emergency Services, and the City of Delta attended alongside school district staff to master the standard protocols for Student Reunification.
Building on that foundational training, the district moved from theory to practice by conducting a student reunification exercise in May. This hands-on simulation allowed school staff, district leadership, and local first responders to execute the controlled release process in real-time with students and parent volunteers. Student reunification exercises will continue to happen annually.
"The exercise proved to be a highly valuable learning experience as it provided some practical insights that we will use to fine-tune processes and logistics for future events," said Vanessa Heal, Emergency Preparedness Manager, Delta School District. "Training alongside our community partners helps strengthen the local bond and builds a cohesive network of safety."
Continuous Alignment and Preparation
Emergency preparedness is not a one-time event, but an ongoing commitment. Vanessa continually engages with school administrators, district staff, and local community partners to ensure the development, refinement, and alignment of emergency response plans for every individual school and the broader Delta community.

Staying Informed: The "Alertable" System
In a real-world emergency, clear and timely communication is just as critical as the physical response. To bridge this gap, families are strongly encouraged to sign up for the City of Delta's public emergency mass notification platform, Alertable , which allows the City and emergency services to broadcast critical, real-time updates directly to subscribers.
How Parents/Caregivers Can Prepare
The effectiveness of our emergency response heavily relies on how quickly we can reach our community.
At the start of each school year, families should ensure the school has the most up-to-date information for:
Emergency Contacts - the people the school will contact in the event your child is ill and needs to go home during the school day
Student Reunification Contacts - it is recommended that all parents/caregivers have an additional three adults authorized to pick up their children. When considering authorizing additional people, they ideally should be:
- An adult (over 19 years of age)
- A trusted individual, such as a close friend, family member, neighbour
- Current daycare or before/after-school provider
- Physically able to travel to the school despite potential obstacles in the community
- Able to speak English (optional) - translators during an emergency may be limited
