Schools can once again apply for funding through the School Playground Equipment Grant as applications for the second year of the program opened on September 16.
Introduced in 2025, schools can receive up to $50,000 in matched funding to build new playgrounds or update existing equipment. The government is providing $3.75 million each year for four years to the program, which has already helped 94 schools throughout the province.
"Safe, inclusive playgrounds give children a place to play, learn and build friendships close to home," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. "Through the School Playground Equipment Grant Program, our government is helping school communities create spaces that support healthy, active lifestyles and strengthen connections among students, families and neighbourhoods. We are pleased to continue this investment and look forward to seeing more projects take shape in communities across Saskatchewan."
The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) administers the program on behalf of government.
"Playgrounds are a necessary public good that support children's physical, social and emotional development," Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association President Darcy McLeod said. "This grant helps communities create safe, accessible spaces where children and families can be active and stay connected. Ongoing investment in playgrounds and recreation infrastructure is essential to ensuring communities across Saskatchewan can continue to grow and thrive."
The opening of the second-year application period was marked at École St. Anne in Prince Albert. The school received $50,000 through the program to develop their new playground which benefits more than 700 students, as well as a daycare and community league that share the space.
"On behalf of the Board of Education, I could not be more proud of all six of our elementary schools for embracing the Saskatchewan Government Playground Grant opportunity and turning this vision into a reality for students across our division," Prince Albert Catholic School Division Board Chair Suzanne Stubbs said. "Through incredible planning and collaboration, every one of our Prince Albert Catholic elementary schools now has a brand-new playground structure that will provide students with years of active play, exploration and joyful memories. This investment in our children is truly incredible and will have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our students."
The program has already had a significant impact for the Prince Albert Catholic School Division. St. Catherine Community School, St. John Community School, St. Francis School and St. Michael Community School began work this year, while École Holy Cross and École St. Anne completed their projects in 2025.
The application period runs from September 16, 2026, to January 29, 2027.
