TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
Donna E. Young reappointed dean, Lincoln Alexander School of Law

May 1, 2025

I am pleased to share that Donna E. Young has been reappointed as dean, Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) for a new five-year term.

A celebrated leader, Young shares the university's commitment to innovation, diversity, and access. Her second term will begin July 1, 2025.

As dean, Donna E. Young is responsible for all academic, administrative, and external activities of the school and associated clinics.

As inaugural dean of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Young has provided dynamic and thoughtful leadership and vision. Under her oversight, the school has grown to become a model for legal education that is more accessible, equitable and technologically advanced.

30+ years in legal academia

Young brings over three decades of experience in legal academia, with a distinguished career focused on law and inequality, race and gender discrimination, and academic freedom.

Her expertise and commitment have been instrumental in shaping the school's mission. Despite the school opening during the pandemic, Young fostered a strong virtual community, with students establishing over 40 clubs and associations.

A respected academic, in a previous role at the Albany Law School, Young was the first Black woman to be granted tenure and the first to be awarded an endowed professorship.

Prestigious recognition

She was named to the Lawyers of Color 50 Under 50 list, and was also awarded a fellowship from Cornell Law School's Gender, Sexuality, and Family Project.

Before entering the legal academy, Young worked in litigation at Toronto's Cornish Roland Barristers & Solicitors, as a consultant at the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and the City of New York Mayor's Office of Labor Relations, Legal Department.

She holds a BSc (Honours) in Psychology from the University of Toronto, an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University and an LL.M. from Columbia University School of Law.

We look forward to Young continuing to lead the Lincoln Alexander School of Law in its growth and success, fostering a progressive legal education that meets the evolving demands of the legal profession and society.
