Expertise in cognitive psychology earns professor award

July 4, 2025

Shayna Rosenbaum, a cognitive neuroscientist and clinical neuropsychologist from York University, is the recipient of the Psychonomic Society's Mid-Career Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the field of scientific psychology.

The Mid-Career Award is granted to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and distinguished contributions to the study of cognition and psychology.

The recognition highlights the impact of Rosenbaum's work in cognitive psychology, a field that examines mental processes including memory and decision-making.

Her commitment to advancing the field is demonstrated through her research excellence as well as her dedication to mentoring students and contributing to the development of academic programs at York University.

"This recognition is especially meaningful, as cognitive psychology serves as the foundation for research conducted in my lab and represents an area of strength at York," says Rosenbaum. "It reflects the collective effort and creativity of many excellent trainees who I have had the privilege to work with and learn from."

Rosenbaum is a professor in York's clinical neuropsychology stream in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health. She is also associate director of the Centre for Integrative and Applied Neuroscience (CIAN) ORU and vice director of Connected Minds - a cutting-edge program funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund that brings together experts at York U and Queen's University to investigate intelligent technologies/artificial intelligence, neuroscience and societal impact.

During York University's 2025 Spring Convocation, Rosenbaum was named a Distinguished Research Professor - a designation that reflects outstanding contributions to the York community. She was also recently appointed the York Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory

In addition to receiving the Mid-Career award, Rosenbaum will take part in discussions and presentations at the Psychonomic Society's annual international conference this November, where leading researchers from around the world gather to share their findings and insights into cognitive psychology.

For Rosenbaum, this recognition not only serves as an individual accolade but also highlights rich collaborations within the scientific community to seek greater insight into cognitive functions and their implications.

"I am excited to continue collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of colleagues within and outside of York to better understand how different types of memory are represented in the brain and how they contribute to other cognitive capacities," says Rosenbaum. "This will enable greater precision in detecting the consequences of compromised brain function and in developing targeted solutions to help mitigate those consequences."
