Three new Loran Scholars will embarking on their academic careers in engineering and health sciences at McMaster University this fall.
Emily Gustus, Jin Lu Yu, and Hector Loiselle have been chosen for the scholarship, which is awarded to students who are starting university and demonstrate strength of character, a deep commitment to service and exceptional leadership potential.

Loran Scholars each receive more than $100,000 over four years of undergraduate study, along with experiential learning opportunities and mentorship.
Of a pool of 5,400 applicants, the 36 recipients of the award are identified for their desire to leave the world better than they found it.
McMaster has invested in 53 Loran Scholars since 1989, including 15 current scholars.

Emily Gustus | Engineering 1 - Co-op
Hometown: Tisdale, Saskatchewan
What the Loran Award means to her: "The Loran Award is a reflection of my journey up to this point, and a catalyst for my growth moving forward."
Why she chose McMaster University: "I chose McMaster because I am interested in nuclear engineering and how it interacts with society, and McMaster is renowned for its programs and research in this sector. I'm excited to be surrounded by people who are going to push me beyond my limits and change my way of thinking in an engaged and diverse environment."
Jin Lu Yu | Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences
Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ontario
What the Loran Award means to her: "Receiving the Loran Award is an incredible honour and a reminder of why leadership is so important. It gives me the opportunity to learn from a community of mentors and peers who are committed to creating positive change."
Why she chose McMaster University: "I chose McMaster iBioMed because it combines engineering and health sciences, allowing me to explore biomedical engineering while building a strong foundation in both fields. I'm most excited to join a collaborative community of students who are passionate about innovation, problem-solving, and improving health care."
Hector Loiselle | Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences
Hometown: Greater Sudbury, Ontario
What the Loran Award means to him: "It is a nearly impossible task to describe in words what receiving the Loran Award means to me. It is simply unreal and life-changing to have the Loran Scholars Foundation be willing to invest in my potential and grant me the opportunity to grow as a leader and person."
Why he chose McMaster University: "I chose McMaster because of its hands-on, innovative and research-intensive iBioMed program, which will allow me to develop practical skills, explore my interests and prepare for a meaningful career. I am also excited to join a community of driven and hard-working students who are committed to making positive changes to the world."
