The new anglophone kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school opening in Campbellton this September will be named Restigouche River School.
"The Restigouche River means a lot to people across the Campbellton area, including Listuguj First Nation," said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson. "That's why I'm proud to support the name chosen by the Anglophone North School District. This is a region with a strong sense of community, and this new school will give students a safe, modern place to learn and grow for years to come."
The name was selected by the district education council out of 355 submissions from the public and stakeholders, and was presented to the minister for approval, as per the process outlined in Policy 409 (multi-year school infrastructure planning).
"I'm so proud to have been part of this project," said Dean Mutch, superintendent of Anglophone North School District. "Our students truly deserve a school that provides lots of new opportunities, and Restigouche River School couldn't be a more perfect name. It captures who the Campbellton community is: connected, resilient and always moving forward together."
The school is on Arran Street, next to Sugarloaf Senior High School, and will replace Campbellton Middle School and Lord Beaverbrook School.
"We would like to thank everyone who helped make Restigouche River School a reality, and to wish all those who will grace its hallways over the coming decades success and happiness," said Gilbert Cyr, the Subdistrict 1 representative on the district education council.
The new facility includes a three-floor classroom wing and amenities such as music and art rooms, technology rooms, science labs, a gym and a cafeteria.
