The provincial government is increasing Research NB's funding by $1 million.
"No one is more invested in solving problems affecting New Brunswick than the people living here," said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D'Amours. "More than ever, we need to capitalize on the talent we have in New Brunswick. Funding research in key areas such as health, natural resources, technology-driven sectors and defence-related industries is essential to growing New Brunswick's potential."
Research investment supports a goal of the government's economic development strategy to grow the province's economy by 10 per cent by 2030. The plan focuses on three priority areas: resource-based industries; knowledge, technology and technology-enabled industries; and defence.
The new funding has already allowed Research NB to launch new programs focused on areas such as technologies for civilian and defence applications and forestry, and to invest in student funding.
"This is the beginning in developing more programs that are aligned with the province's priorities and responsive to the needs of New Brunswickers," said Candice Pollack, CEO of Research NB. "Research is about more than what we discover; it's about what those discoveries make possible. This additional investment gives Research NB greater capacity to support promising ideas, connect the right people, and help turn New Brunswick's research strengths into practical solutions that benefit our communities, economy and future."
