Construction starts on school addition in West Kelowna

February 11, 2026

Construction is underway on a school addition at École Hudson Road Elementary that will add 265 new student seats for families in West Kelowna.

"Investing in schools is about supporting families today while preparing for the future," said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. "This addition at École Hudson Road Elementary will provide students with the space they need to learn, succeed and feel supported in a modern school environment."

Benefits

The new addition will include:

  • nine classrooms and two kindergarten rooms
  • a multipurpose space
  • improved student drop-off and pickup, and play areas

"Strong schools are the foundation of strong communities," said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. "By building this addition, we're investing not just in today's students, but in the long-term success of families in central Okanagan."

Supporting students in central Okanagan

The Province is investing nearly $23 million in École Hudson Road Elementary. The new addition is expected to open in fall 2027.

Since 2017, the Province has approved more than $400 million to create nearly 4,440 new seats for Central Okanagan students. In total, more than 1,600 of these new student seats have opened and more than 2,700 new seats are underway.

This includes new additions at Chief Tomat Elementary school, North Glenmore Elementary school, and Webber Road Elementary school to help meet enrolment growth.

"We are glad to see this continued investment in the students and families of the central Okanagan," said Valene Johnson, board chair, Central Okanagan Public Schools. "As our community continues to grow, we look forward to working with the Province to make sure we have the learning spaces our students and families need to thrive."

Creating more student spaces in B.C.

Since 2017, the Province has approved more than $6.7 billion to create more than 47,000 new student seats and more than 39,000 seismically safer seats in B.C. schools.

Of these spaces, more than 23,500 new student seats and more than 33,000 seismically safer seats are complete.

As the province grows, government remains committed to working with school districts and municipalities to provide students with safe, modern places to learn.
