March 13, 2025

John Abbott College is proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of Derrick Chung, Mathematics teacher, who has been awarded two significant grants for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence (AI) and education. These grants highlight Derrick's commitment to advancing student success through cutting-edge technology and innovative teaching methodologies.

Derrick Chung has been awarded a Pôle interordres de Montréal (PIM) grant for his project entitled "Bridging Knowledge to Practice: Disseminating an Intelligent Support System for Enhanced Math Learning Across Quebec's CEGEP and University Communities." This forward-thinking initiative focuses on the development and implementation of an intelligent support system (ISS) designed to enhance mathematics learning by incorporating AI-assisted assessment tools and an integrated chatbot, the system provides personalized feedback, helping students identify strengths and weaknesses while enabling self-paced learning.

This knowledge transfer grant will support the creation of accessible training resources and workshops, ensuring that educators across Québec can effectively integrate this high-tech solution into their classrooms. This project is a continuity of a PIM grant on intelligent tutoring system in math originally awarded to Université de Montréal; Derrick is now leading and directing the implementation of this project across the CEGEP network.

In addition, Derrick Chung is a co-applicant on a newly awarded ECQ (Entente Canada-Québec) grant led by Dr. Neerusha Baurhoo Gokool of Université de Montréal. Titled "Surmonter l'échec en calcul: Transformer l'apprentissage et l'enseignement pour le succès académique des cégépiens.nes avec un Système de Tutorat Intelligent," this groundbreaking project aims to combat high failure rates in calculus. By leveraging AI-driven tutoring systems, the initiative will provide students with 24/7 support, fostering metacognitive skills and effective learning strategies. In collaboration with Dawson College, Université de Montréal, and Concordia University, this project employs state-of-the-art technological and pedagogical approaches to address the diverse cognitive and emotional needs of students.

John Abbott College extends its heartfelt congratulations to Derrick Chung for his dedication to student success and his innovative approach to education. These grants not only recognize his exceptional work but also position John Abbott College at the forefront of AI-driven learning solutions, in an ever-evolving academic landscape.
