UNBC improves in two categories in World University Rankings

October 20, 2025

The University of Northern British Columbia notched its best-ever results in two of the five pillars in the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

For the fifth consecutive year, UNBC improved its scores in both the research environment pillar, which includes results from the global academic reputation survey, and the international outlook pillar, which measures international student and staff representation as well as international research collaboration. Both marks represent the University's highest-ever performance in these categories.

UNBC's international outlook continues to be its strongest area, ranking 703rd worldwide. The University also maintained a strong showing in the teaching category, coming within 0.1 points of last year's record score.

"This recognition speaks to the strength of UNBC's community and the meaningful work happening across our campuses," says UNBC Interim President Dr. Bill Owen. "From classrooms and research labs to field work and partnerships that span the globe, UNBC's students, faculty and staff are leading change that matters."

Overall, UNBC placed in the group of universities ranked 1,201-1,500 of the 2,191 universities that were ranked.

The audited rankings include 18 metrics divided into five pillars: Teaching (the learning environment); Research Environment (volume, income and reputation); Research Quality (research influence); International Outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry (knowledge transfer).
