It's not just a new academic year launching at Cambrian College this week: it is also the kick-off to a new season of varsity sports, and it begins this weekend with the Cambrian Shield soccer teams on home field.
Saturday, the Shield are hosting the Algonquin College Wolves, with the women's team on the field at 1 p.m., followed by the men's squad at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday, the Shield are hosting the George Brown Huskies, with the women's game starting at 12 o'clock followed by the men's match at 2:30 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend.
The new season follows a year that saw both Cambrian soccer teams advance to the OCAA post-season.
The men's team produced several standout individual performances during the 2025 season, including Siah Stone, who was named the team's Most Valuable Player at Cambrian's annual Athletics Banquet. Arvin Alcid and Elie Yoma shared Rookie of the Year honours.
On the women's side, Olivia Skinkle made an immediate impact in her first season with the Shield, earning both Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year honours. Molly Watson received the Coach's Award, while Ainslee Buchan was named Most Improved Player.
Cambrian's cross-country runners are also preparing to hit the trails for another season of OCAA competition, with the first meet of the year scheduled for September 18 at the Seneca Polytechnic Invitational in King City.
Shaun McKim of Sudbury was named Cambrian's Most Valuable Runner following last season, while Yuvraj Singh earned Rookie of the Year honours. Sudbury's Alyssa Atichison received the Coach's Award and Anh Phuong was named Most Improved Runner.
"We saw some tremendous performances from our Shield athletes last season, and there is a real sense of momentum carrying into this year," says Tim Yu, Manager of Athletics at Cambrian College. "Our men's volleyball team repeated as OCAA silver medalists, our soccer teams both earned their way into the OCAA post-season, we had athletes recognized for outstanding individual performances, and our cross-country runners continued to represent Cambrian extremely well. There is a lot of talent, some exciting new athletes joining us, and tremendous energy around our teams. We are ready to get the new season underway, and we want our students and the entire community behind the Shield."
Cambrian College also competes in varsity badminton and volleyball. The badminton and volleyball seasons get underway in October.
