EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Celebrating the Division's new high school namesake

September 19, 2023

In the fall of 2022, we asked the public to suggest names for the new southeast Grades 10-12 high school, which will open in September 2024. We received 353 unique name suggestions, and after reviewing the submissions, a shortlist of recommendations was provided to the Board of Trustees for final selection.

At today's public meeting, the Board of Trustees announced the new southeast high school will be named Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School. The new school is named after Francis Whiskeyjack, a longtime mentor and advocate for students in Edmonton.

About Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack

Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack has been a pillar in the community and has worked with numerous community organizations, including Edmonton Public Schools, as a trusted Elder and cultural advisor. "It is truly an honour to name this new high school after an inspiring and accomplished individual," said Board Chair Trisha Estabrooks. "For decades, Elder Francis Whiskeyjack has been a mentor and advocate for students in Edmonton, including in our schools. Through this school naming, his kindness and commitment to inclusivity will inspire future generations."
