Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS) is pleased to announce that Janalee Slaney has been appointed Associate Superintendent - People Services and Indigenous Relations.
"Janalee brings a wealth of experience in providing instruction and supports to students in remote communities. She has a deep commitment to ensuring that all students have opportunities to learn and succeed," said Incoming Superintendent Jimmi Lou Irvine. "As Associate Superintendent, Janalee will focus on creating learning environments that support student achievement by building staff capacity and promoting instructional excellence."
Slaney will also lead the development of initiatives that bridge systemic gaps for Indigenous students, and work collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Carriers, and community partners to create culturally safe learning environments.
For the last year and a half, Slaney has served as Regional Superintendent of Schools for Kivalliq School Operations in Nunavut. Her career in Nunavut included roles as a teacher, student support teacher, principal and superintendent. She also spent several years as a teacher in Pauingassi First Nations. She has a Master of Education in Curriculum, Teaching & Learning Studies degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
"As a new Associate Superintendent, I am looking forward to becoming part of the NLPS educational community," said Slaney. "I welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with the school board, staff, students, and communities to support student success."
Northern Lights is currently in the process of reconfiguring its division leadership team due to the retirement of Superintendent Rick Cusson at the end of July. In addition to incoming Superintendent Jimmi Lou Irvine and Secretary-Treasurer Paula Elock, the new team will consist of two Associate Superintendents, four directors of learning, and four non-instructional directors.
