GREATER ESSEX COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Massey H.E.A.R.T.S. Masquerade Soirée Promotes Connection and Mental Health Awareness

June 1, 2026

Students and staff at Vincent Massey Secondary School came together on April 23 for an engaging and impactful evening at the Masquerade Soirée, hosted by Massey H.E.A.R.T.S. (Helping Everyone Achieve Resilience Through Support). The event welcomed approximately 140 attendees, including invited guests from other schools, and successfully created a space focused on connection and mental health awareness.

The evening began with a variety of interactive booths designed to bring students together through shared activities. Guests explored stations featuring card games, mental health trivia, creative fan-making, henna designs, and a photo booth, while also supporting peers through student-run Massey Merchants. Each activity encouraged both creativity and conversation, helping to break down barriers and build a sense of community.

A key highlight of the event was a presentation by Hannah Zare from Jack.org, who spoke about misconceptions surrounding mental health, the impact of social media, and how students can support one another. Her message reinforced the importance of empathy, and open dialogue among peers.

The theme of the evening carried a meaningful message. In a symbolic moment, attendees were invited to "take off their masks and show their true selves," encouraging authenticity and reminding students that they are supported within their school community.

Following the presentation, students enjoyed an interactive live mystery game led by performers from the school's production of Rumours, which encouraged teamwork, communication, and inclusion. The evening concluded with a shared dinner and a performance by the Massey Jazz Band, providing an opportunity for students to relax, connect, and celebrate together. The event was supported by several local businesses whose contributions helped make the evening possible.

Reflecting on the experience, Lara Seifi, a member of the Massey H.E.A.R.T.S. Executive Team and an instrumental leader in planning this event, shared:

"Our club, Massey H.E.A.R.T.S., which stands for Helping Everyone Achieve Resilience Through Support, is all about spreading awareness regarding mental health. This year, we attempted a new approach: the Masquerade Soirée! Through this event, we were able to gather the school community to allow them to connect through activities and a presentation from our guest speaker, Hannah Zare! This is the first time for Massey H.E.A.R.T.S. to host a school-wide dinner, and we would like to announce that it is one of our biggest accomplishments! We would also like to thank everyone who helped in preparing this event, and our guests for attending!"

The even was also made possible because of support from Ms. Maria McGuire, the Teacher Sponsor for Massey H.E.A.R.T.S.

The success of the Masquerade Soirée highlights the leadership and dedication of students in creating safe, welcoming spaces where meaningful conversations about mental health can take place.
