The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Amanda Wheatley as its new Visiting Program Officer (VPO) for AI and Library Strategies.

Amanda is an Associate Librarian at McGill University where she serves as Liaison Librarian for Management, Business, and Entrepreneurship, as well as Outreach and Engagement Coordinator for the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. She is the co-editor of the book The Rise of AI: Implications and Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Academic Libraries and co-author of the Choice 360 white paper "Building an AI Literacy Framework: Perspectives from Instruction Librarians and Current Information Literacy Tools". Her research primarily targets AI literacy and the use of AI tools for information seeking.
As CARL's Visiting Program Officer for AI and Library Strategies, Amanda will take a leading role in defining and advancing CARL's strategic activities related to artificial intelligence. Her work will include developing guidelines and best practices for the use of generative AI in library operations, planning programming for library staff, students, and faculty, and monitoring and strategically assessing developments in the field, including within the policy landscape. She will also collaborate, coordinate, and liaise with related AI initiatives across the Canadian academic library community and among CARL's peer organizations internationally.
CARL looks forward to working with Amanda in this important and rapidly evolving area. Her appointment begins on January 15, 2026.
