Buck Martinez had a big weekend. On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the longtime Blue Jays broadcaster, former player and former manager was inducted into the Blue Jays Hall of Excellence. Jays Care Foundation marked the moment by creating a new scholarship in his name for TMU's Sport Media program.

The Buck Martinez Scholarship for Sport Media will support an incoming Sport Media student who shows a passion for sport, storytelling and community engagement, but who also faces financial barriers.
A friendship that started at TMU
Jamie Campbell knows Martinez's impact firsthand. The TMU alumnus and Sportsnet broadcaster worked alongside him on Blue Jays broadcasts for 16 years.
"Each day, I was witness to his kindness and compassion," says Campbell. "He also understands the challenges faced by those hoping to forge a path in media."
Campbell started at TMU in September 1986, right as Martinez's playing career was winding down. He never expected their paths to cross.
"In a small way, my experience at TMU led to a lasting friendship with Buck," he says. "And for that, I am grateful. A scholarship in Buck's name at TMU not only adds to an impactful legacy, it will give TMU students a chance to dream for years to come."
Looking forward while honouring a legacy
Nicole W. Forrester, professor and undergraduate program director of Sport Media in the RTA School of Media, says the scholarship does more than celebrate Martinez's career.
"What makes the Buck Martinez Scholarship especially meaningful is that it looks forward while honouring an extraordinary legacy. Buck's recent induction into the Blue Jays' Hall of Excellence recognizes the many ways he has contributed to baseball."
She added that the award opens doors for students who might not otherwise get the chance.
"This scholarship carries that legacy forward by creating opportunities for the next generation of sport storytellers, particularly students whose financial circumstances might otherwise limit their ability to pursue their potential. It is an incredible investment in our students and one for which we are deeply appreciative."
