NORTHERN GATEWAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
New Assistant Principal named for Mayerthorpe Jr/Sr High School

April 27, 2026

The Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Maureen Kendall as Assistant Principal of Mayerthorpe Jr/Sr High School, commencing with the 2026-27 school year.

Mrs. Kendall is a highly experienced and dedicated educator who brings a wealth of knowledge and professional insight to the role, cultivated over 23 years of service with NGPS. Throughout her career, she has served as a classroom teacher, Mental Health Capacity Building Program Coordinator, guidance counsellor, and outreach coordinator.

Mrs. Kendall began her career with NGPS at Percy Baxter Middle School in Whitecourt, where she taught Grades 6-8 Language Arts, Social Studies, Drama, Foods, and Creative Writing. During this time, she spent a year teaching Grades 7 and 8 students in an alternative setting, supporting those who faced challenges in the traditional classroom. This experience was particularly meaningful, as she fostered an environment grounded in mutual respect and strong relationships, witnessing the positive impact on student engagement and success.

In 2013, Mrs. Kendall assumed the role of Mental Health Capacity Building Coordinator through a partnership between the Division and Alberta Health Services. In this position, she developed a broader understanding of the education system while supporting the wellness of children, youth, and families. Her work also included responsibilities in budgeting, reporting, and professional learning, alongside collaboration with community partners and agencies.

The following year, she joined Hilltop Jr/Sr High School, where she taught Grade 11 English, served as the school's guidance counsellor, and taught summer camps, further strengthening her experience in student support, academic advising, and community collaboration. In 2018, Mrs. Kendall transitioned to Gateway Academy Whitecourt as Outreach Coordinator, where she supported students in Grades 9-12 in planning their pathways to graduation and beyond. In this role, she taught English across grade levels, supported students with diverse needs, and connected families with community resources to enhance student success.

"Maureen is a thoughtful and intentional educator who consistently demonstrates a commitment to student and staff growth, success, and wellness," said Kevin Bird, Superintendent of Schools. "Her breadth of experience - from classroom instruction and assessment to alternative programming, guidance counselling, and system leadership - will be a tremendous asset to the team at Mayerthorpe Jr/Sr High School."

Mrs. Kendall shares: "I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve the Mayerthorpe community as Assistant Principal of Mayerthorpe Jr/Sr High. I look forward to working alongside Mrs. Roszko, and fostering meaningful, collaborative relationships with the staff, students, and families within our school. Let's go Tigers!"

Mrs. Kendall holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree from the University of Alberta and is an active member of the Division's COMPASS Leadership Group.

Congratulations Maureen!

The Division extends its sincere appreciation to Ms. Reanne Schaber for her service as Assistant Principal at Mayerthorpe Jr/Sr High School. Ms. Schaber has accepted an opportunity abroad for the upcoming school year, and we wish her continued success in her future endeavours.
