McMaster University has launched searches for two senior academic leadership positions: dean of the Faculty of Humanities and vice-provost, Teaching and Learning.
"As McMaster advances its new strategic plan, we are seeking visionary leaders who can strengthen the academic experience, foster innovation and advance excellence in teaching, learning and research," said Maureen MacDonald, provost and vice-president (Academic).
As part of the searches, surveys invited the Faculty of Humanities to provide input on the dean role and the broader teaching and learning community at McMaster to comment on the vice-provost role. This feedback identified the opportunities, priorities and leadership qualities that should guide the selection of each new leader.
"I'm grateful to everyone whose input helped shape the profile of the kind of leaders we want to find, and to Kim Dej, Pamela Swett and Sean Corner for their leadership and service," MacDonald said.
The search for a new vice-provost, Teaching and Learning follows the completion of Kim Dej's term on June 30, 2027.
The vice-provost provides leadership in teaching and learning innovation, student success and academic development, working closely with Faculties and campus partners to advance excellence in education across the university.
A search committee chaired by the provost and vice-president (Academic) has been established with members from across the McMaster community with representation from all six Faculties, Provost Council, the MacPherson Institute, McMaster Continuing Education, the Office of Community Engagement, students, staff and an equity, diversity and inclusion advisor.
The university is also seeking its next dean of the Faculty of Humanities following the departure of former dean Pamela Swett. Sean Corner is serving as acting dean while the search is underway.
Reporting to the provost and vice-president (Academic), the dean is the academic, administrative and community leader of the Faculty of Humanities, providing strategic direction in support of academic excellence, research, creative activity, student success and community engagement.
The selection committee for this role is also chaired by the provost and vice-president (Academic) and includes the vice-president of research, dean of social sciences, representatives from Humanities departments and programs, undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and an equity, diversity, and inclusion advisor.
Information about both opportunities is available on the Office of the Provost website.
The selection processes for both positions are guided by McMaster's approved procedures and governance frameworks for senior academic appointments.
