Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) students and staff are once again closing the distance in the fight against cancer, while also honouring a true Canadian hero, Terry Fox. Throughout September, schools across the Division are participating in this year's Terry Fox School Run, an annual event held by schools nationwide to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
During their Terry Fox School Runs, EIPS students ran in honour of personal heroes affected by cancer.
"Terry's story holds important lessons for all of us," says Colleen Holowaychuk, the Board Chair of EIPS. "Despite the obstacles he faced, he proved great things can be accomplished through strength and perseverance something we should all strive to do."
Each year, students and staff take time out of their day to run, jog or walk in memory of Fox and his dream of a world without cancer. To prepare, students also spend the month doing various fundraising activities as they learn about the values Fox displayed.
"What makes the Terry Fox School Run so meaningful is seeing schools and their communities come together in support of a cause that touches so many lives," says Holowaychuk. "It's a powerful reminder that everyone can make a difference."
Founded in 1981, the run has evolved into one of the largest fundraising events in Canada. To date, the foundation has raised more than $950 million and funded 1,300 projects to honour Fox's dream. EIPS has made a notable contribution to that effort. Last year alone, EIPS schools raised more than $72,000 for the foundation. Since 1992, the Division has raised nearly $1 million. While the official Terry Fox School Run day is September 28, schools across the Division host runs throughout September and into October to recognize Terry's legacy. Community members interested in learning more about a school's Terry Fox School Run are encouraged to contact the school directly.
