SASKATCHEWAN POLYTECHNIC
Sask Polytech students strike gold at Skills Canada Nationals

July 18, 2025

Saskatchewan Polytechnic students and apprentices brought home a haul of medals from the 2025 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), held this past spring in Regina. Among the standout performers were Jorda Thomas and Wesley Rowe, who each captured gold in their respective categories.

More than 500 competitors from across the country gathered to compete in over 40 skilled trade and technology areas. The event also marked the official announcement of WorldSkills Team Canada 2026, which will represent the country at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, next fall.

SCNC is Canada's only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices. Its mission is to inspire youth to explore rewarding careers in the skilled trades and technologies sectors that are increasingly vital to Canada's economy.

"The Skills Canada National Competition highlights the incredible opportunities available in the skilled trades and technologies," says Dr. Larry Rosia, Sask Polytech president and CEO. "At the annual SCNC, it's always exciting for our students to have the opportunity to so clearly demonstrate the value of a polytechnic education and for them to be celebrated. Congratulations to our six medal-winning recipients. This national recognition is a testament to your talent and hard work. You make Sask Polytech proud."

"The competitors in the skilled trades competitions showcased amazing talent and dedication to their trades," Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) CEO Jeff Ritter said. "Congratulations to all the medal recipients! Your commitment and skill stood out on the national stage."

In addition to her gold medal in Graphic Design Technology, Thomas was awarded the RBC Best of Region Award for Saskatchewan, an honour she also received in 2024. The $1,500 award, presented by RBC Future Launch, recognizes the top-scoring competitor from each province and territory and supports their continued education and training in the skilled trades. Thomas will be joining Team Canada at WorldSkills in China next year.

Congratulations to all the Sask Polytech students who participated and medalled at the event.
