George Brown Polytechnic (GBP) welcomed Chi Nguyen, Member of Parliament for Spadina Harbourfront, for her first official visit to the institution's Waterfront Campus. The visit underscored GBP's role as a key partner in advancing federal priorities, particularly workforce development for critical sectors such as healthcare, construction, and technology.
Nguyen toured the Health Sciences facilities and Limberlost Place before meeting with GBP President Dr. Gervan Fearon and senior leadership. The tour showcased George Brown's state-of-the-art simulation learning environments for nursing, long-term care, and dental programs, followed by an overview of Limberlost Place a landmark in sustainable campus design. The MP also toured GBP's newest child care centre, Mary's Place, on the ground floor of Limberlost Place, one of 14 model lab schools for diploma and degree programs at the School of Early Childhood.
During the sit-down meeting, GBP leaders emphasized the polytechnic's unique position in delivering applied, accelerated, and employer-connected programs that prepare graduates for immediate entry into the labour market. Recent program expansions, including the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Master of Construction Management, were highlighted as examples of GBP's commitment to addressing Canada's labour shortages.
Nguyen, who serves on the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, engaged in discussions about GBP's priorities and advocacy efforts. Key topics included the importance of student housing and policy stability for international students, who represent a vital component of Canada's future workforce, as well as the need for research funding for polytechnics to drive innovation and economic growth. GBP also shared its latest Annual Research Report with MP Nguyen, highlighting applied research projects that drive innovation and support Canada's economic and social growth.
"George Brown Polytechnic is a frontline partner in training the workforce Canada needs and a part of city and community developments taking place in Toronto, including at the Waterfront," said President Fearon. "Our applied research and work-integrated learning approach ensure graduates are ready to contribute to major infrastructure projects, healthcare, and other priority sectors. Our brand at GBP speaks to and inspires our students to - OWN YOUR TOMORROW."
This visit marks an important step toward deepening collaboration between GBP and federal initiatives by aligning applied education with national priorities. GBP is committed to building a resilient workforce and driving innovation that supports Canada's economic and social growth.
