Northern Lakes College proudly celebrated Convocation 2026 at the Multi Recreation Centre in Slave Lake on June 5. A record-breaking 1,192 graduates were recognized, marking the largest graduating class in the College's history.
President, Dr. Glenn Mitchell, and Board of Governors' Chair, Barry Sharkawi, led the graduate procession, while Charlie Orr, Chair of the Peerless Lake Community Education Committee, opened the ceremony with a blessing. Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Michelle Mitchell, welcomed graduates, families and guests before introducing members of the platform party, Board of Governors, and dignitaries in attendance.
Dr. Glenn Mitchell encouraged graduates to carry both perseverance and compassion into the next part of their journeys, reminding them of the impact they can have within their communities and beyond.
We don't talk about grace enough. Grace is what brings our values to life. Grace is how we treat others when it matters most. Grace is how we respond under pressure and grace is also how we carry ourselves in moments of success. Grace has the power to unite, uplift and inspire - so yes, let the world feel your grace.
Dr. Glenn Mitchell, President & CEO, Northern Lakes College
The 2026 Friend of Northern Lakes College Award was presented to G4 Stoney Nakoda Tsuut'ina Tribal Council in recognition of its ongoing commitment to supporting education and community development. Valedictorian, Courtney Cunningham, reflected on the many different programs and pathways the 2026 convocation represented. She affirmed that the shared values of compassion, accountability and responsibility connected graduates across all disciplines.
Convocation celebrations also included a traditional capping and pinning ceremony held on the evening of June 4 to honor the completion of the Practical Nursing Program. During the ceremony, 66 graduates from across the service region received their nursing caps and pins, recognizing their transition into the nursing profession and celebrating the dedication and commitment required throughout their studies.
With record attendance and guest RSVPs this year, convocation 2026 also marked Northern Lakes College's most successful livestreamed ceremony to date, allowing Graduates, their families, friends and supporters to take part in the celebration virtually. Looking ahead, President & CEO Dr. Glenn Mitchell confirmed that future convocations will expand to two ceremonies beginning next year to accommodate the overwhelming turnout and ensure as many guests as possible could share in the experience. This is an exciting period of growth for the college and the communities it serves.
