Beginning in Fall 2027, students entering Lethbridge Polytechnic's Primary Care Paramedic program will benefit from a new two-year diploma. The transition, from a certificate program, aligns with new educational requirements established by the Alberta College of Paramedics and ensures graduates are well prepared to meet evolving standards for entry into the profession.

Through a mixture of class lectures, hands-on experience and 520 hours of work-integrated learning in hospital and ambulance service settings, students will complete their two years of training alongside experienced emergency service professionals.
"As we see increasing complexities within our health-care systems, one thing is clear - we need more health-care professionals to support our growing population," says Debra Bardock, dean, Centre for Health and Wellness. "Graduates of this program will be proficient and confident in their abilities to either ladder into additional learning opportunities, or enter the workforce in primary patient care, helping those who are often in their greatest time of need."
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to write the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators exam to qualify for practice in Alberta and other jurisdictions in Canada. Graduates can also choose to continue their education to become an advanced care paramedic.
As the transition to a diploma program is driven by the regulatory body, students who have previously graduated or are currently graduating from the polytechnic's one-year certificate program remain as crucial to the needs of current workforce demands.
