"School board trustees across Ontario take their roles very seriously, particularly their commitment to being financially responsible, transparent, and accountable to the communities and students they serve.
As Minister Calandra said, 'Most boards across the province of Ontario are doing the right thing. They're managing their budgets properly and supporting students and teachers.'
The Minister's stated focus on putting resources where they matter most -- benefitting students directly -- is encouraging, and OPSBA is pleased that supervisors have been tasked with reviewing how provincial funding is working at the operational level.
Recent government responses to longstanding advocacy efforts -- especially around special education, student transportation funding, and lifting the eight-year school closure moratorium -- have been heartening. Like the Minister, trustees want the very best for students and view this as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and rebuild together in the best interests of all learners.
OPSBA also looks forward to engaging directly with the supervisors to help surface and share strong practices from school boards across the province -- practices the Minister himself has acknowledged.
This is an important moment to continue working collaboratively with the province to advance our shared goals of transparency, accountability, and the best possible outcomes for students across Ontario. We urge the supervisors to maintain open and transparent lines of communication with the trustees who represent parents, students, and communities. We truly are all in this together for our students."
