Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) student Logan Swanson of Didsbury High School has brought home a Gold Medal in Welding from the Skills Canada National Competition, held in Toronto on May 28th and 29th, representing Team Alberta on the national stage.
Team Alberta is made up of the highest-ranking gold medalists from the provincial Skills competition held May 6th and 7th.
The Skills Canada National Competition is Canada's only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices, bringing together top competitors from across the country.
Competing among the nation's best, Swanson rose to the top of the field and claimed gold. This achievement reflects not only Swanson's individual dedication and skill, but also the opportunities afforded him by CTS programming and Dual Credit opportunities through CESD, and the network of people who supported him along the way.
Cassie Quick, Logan's Industrial Arts Teacher, said, "It was wonderful to see Logan in his element doing what he loves to do. He has worked incredibly hard to harness his skills in welding and it truly shows. I am proud to have gotten to teach Logan at DHS and encourage him to take the Skills journey. Logan has a bright future and a wonderful career ahead of him.
Brianne Fletcher, Director, Community Learning Campus for Chinook's Edge School Division and Olds College, spoke to the significance of the accomplishment.
"Logan's success is a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to support a student's passion. From his early experiences in CTS programming at school, to Dual Credit opportunities, pre-employment training, dedicated teachers, industry partners such as CAREERS, and the unwavering support of his family, each step helped him develop his skills and confidence. When we help students discover what excites them and provide meaningful opportunities to pursue that passion, incredible things can happen. Logan's national gold medal is a testament to the impact of that collective support."
Alberta's gold medal success at the national competition did not end at Swanson's achievement. Jack Butts, a graduate of Innisfail High School, also claimed gold for Team Alberta, winning in the Industrial Mechanic category. Butts' victory further demonstrates the depth of skilled trades talent emerging from CESD schools.
The gold medal performances highlight the impact of wraparound community support, from classroom programming to industry partnerships, in helping students reach their full potential.
